Body language: the telltale signs

The body has its own language which often reveals more than words. Unconscious gestures can say a lot about someone’s ease and attraction to you. Here are signs to observe as per synergologists, the specialists in body language and non-verbal communication.

Their eyes

Eyes are the mirror of the soul, and they prove to be very enlightening. A person who flutters their eyelids while looking at you is being responsive and grateful for your presence. On the contrary, if a person is barely blinking or not at all, it shows indifference or a lack of interest. Also, a person staring wide-eyed or with eyes like saucers doesn't bode well; it’s a sign of being uneasy.

Now, the eye contact. When someone can’t keep eye contact, especially when you exchange glances, this could mean the person is into you but timid. If their eyes meet yours, casting rapid glances, you can likely assume that they’re very interested in you.

Their mouth

The person stares at your mouth or looks at it continuously? So be it! Their attraction is obvious. Unlike a person who doesn't care to look at your lips, there's a good chance that the person is indifferent or disinterested. Either way, the outcome isn't looking good.

Their hands

If their hands are clasped and relaxed, the other is into you or your discussion. If they’re scratching their arm, the person isn't at ease and likely exasperated. Hands pressed against the body? The person is guarded and listens intently to what you say. If the person rests their head on their hand, it’s a sign of boredom and withdrawal. Finally, when someone crosses their arms, it means the person is apprehensive.

Their body

How is the position of their body compared to yours? A body leaning slightly or slowly toward yours is a sign of interest, compared to rigid body leaning back or sitting straight, crossed-armed, indicates that the person isn't into you at all.

Their legs

Uncrossed legs means an honest person. But someone having their legs crossed is closed off, guarded or uncomfortable.  When their legs are apart, it suggests not only crudeness but arrogance.

Their hair

When a person keeps playing with their hair, it shows curiosity and an attempt at seduction.

Trivial little details

If you notice someone pushing an object on the outer side of the table or sweep aside the table top, this is a sign of rejection. On the other hand, if this person lightly strokes the table toward themselves, it shows appreciation of the date or the story told.  You don’t have to talk to learn about a new person.

Despite all the small signs identified by synergologists, remember that a first appointment is a major source of stress.  The gestures aren't necessarily representative of their state of mind or their true personality. Listen more to your intuition and, if you like the person, give yourself the chance to validate your feelings.  Give her a second appointment to get to know her better.
